Widow and Adversary

5/17/2012

This parable is from Luke 18: 1-8.  To save space I will not type this passage out, but request that you read it from your own Bible.  This widow is no particular widow with the exception that she has an adversary which will not change his/her doings.  The widow is representative of God's elect (those who have trusted Christ for salvation).  The adversary is not simply someone who is pestering the widow, but someone who has done something wrong to the widow and will not repent (change their mind and admit they have done wrong and try to amend the situation).  The adversary is representative of anyone (lost or saved) who has wronged God's elect and is not willing to repent get it right and continues to bother them about it.  Because the adversary will not leave the widow alone, she persistently seeks assistance from a unjust (lost) judge.  He could care less about her situation but because of her persistence, he finally aids her and rids her of the harassment of her adversary.  Jesus explains that if someone that is not concerned about the widow's well being will do this, how much more eager is God to avenge his own if they will but have faith and understand his longsuffering.  Jesus ends the parable and closes his discussion on this matter with the statement "shall he find faith on the earth?".  I will list some lessons we should take from this parable, but I know there are many more, please feel free to add them in the comments of this post.
Lessons learned:
1.  God will avenge His own if they have faith in His ways and timing.
2.  God will avenge His own if their faith is persistent.
3.  God is longsuffering to allow the adversary ample time to repent and make things right.
4.  As we get nearer to His coming, there will not be much of this good faith left among His people.
God can take care of us, our family, and our country if we are willing to persist through faith!

Live Together or Marry

Proverbs 18:22  "Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the Lord."  If finding a wife is a good thing, we should not be satisfied with simply dating and acting like a married couple in the bedroom.  We should also never consider living together.  A wife is a lady that we have married.  If we settle for anything other than marriage when we have found the lady we are supposed to be with, we are settling for much less than the best.  We are also not in the "favour of the Lord".

Women Preachers

Does God want ladies preaching when men are in the audience and pastoring His churches?  According to the Bible, I would have to say no, he does not want this to be going on.  I don't know all of his reasons, but I think His Word is clear.  Read these verses and decide for yourself.  I Corinthians 14:33-35 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.  Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law.  And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home; for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.           I Timothy 2:11-12  Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.  But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.

Life Verse or Passage

Do you have a life verse, or maybe a favorite verse?  If so, share it with us.  If not, study and find one.  When I was asked as a young person to find one for myself, I thought it might be neat to have but would really be of no use to me.  Now that I am passed the midway point of my life, there have been many times when I have simply went to my verse in my mind and the Lord has used it to help keep me on track.  God says in His Word that His Word will not return void, it can and will make a difference if we allow it to.  My verse in Matthew 6:33 "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."  I have not always been able to live it, but it always gives me a good target.  That is what a life verse should do.

Hypocrisy

Are there hypocrites and Christians living in sin within the doors of true churches? Of course there is. Church is for the believer to have a closer relationship with God, and for the unbeliever to come to repentance. Just because there are believers, believers with bad testimonies, unbelievers, and unbelievers who claim to be believers in the church is not a valid reason to not attend church on a regular basis. It is definitely not an excuse that will hold up with God for not trusting Christ as Saviour.
